LIFEbeat & synthpop duo Holy Ghost! honor the legacy of West End Records and its founder, Mel Cheren.
Mel, a fierce advocate for the LGBT community, was one of LIFEbeat’s original, most longtime and most inspiring supporters and contributors. For all of his accomplishments in the music industry -- The Godfather of Disco, West End's founder and owner of the legendary nightclub Paradise Garage -- Mel was most proud of his work supporting various causes and charities, and in particular his efforts in the fight against AIDS.
His charity, 24 Hours for Life, was the original sponsor of LIFEbeat in the early 90’s, and as a lifetime board member of LIFEbeat, his guidance led to the organization’s leadership throughout decades of rallying the music industry in the fight against AIDS.
From the band:
"The history of West End Records cannot be told without also mentioning the tireless work done by the label's founder, Mel Cheren, educating young people about sexual safety and fighting the ongoing HIV / AIDS crisis. Both charities were extremely important to Mel … [and] it’s an honor to continue to give back where he would have wanted.”
Daniel Glass, President and Founder of Glassnote Records and a LIFEbeat founding board member, remembers Mel:
“Mel was there in the very beginning to inspire us and help us organize the fight. The legendary West End Records is just one part of his legacy."
