National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) was designed to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDSprevention, care and treatment among Black Americans and mobilize Black communities.
The movement has four main objectives that it hopes to impress upon the African American community:
· Get tested for HIV and know your status
· Get educated about HIV/AIDS in the local community
· Get involved with the community
· Get treated if you have tested positive for HIV or been diagnosed with AIDS
Why is there a need?
· In 2002, HIV was the third leading cause of death for African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44.
· African Americans comprise approximately 13 percent of the U.S. population, but almost 50% of HIV/AIDS cases.
· In 2002, African Americans accounted for 55 percent of deaths due to AIDS.
· HIV is 100% preventable! |
